Getting Around
The beauty of Rome is best seen by foot, with all of the major attractions within walking distance of the city centre. Hiring a bike is also a great way of getting around, as is the network of public transport, including plentiful buses and the metro, which offers two lines. There is also a direct train that runs from the airport to the city centre. Official city taxis are white and metered.
Stroll the Centro Storico
Lose yourself in Rome's narrow cobbled streets that make up Centro Storico, starting from Piazza del Popolo, running through Piazza Venezia to the Colosseum. You'll stumble upon some of the Eternal City's main attractions as you roam through these walkways including the preserved Pantheon and beautiful baroque artwork at Piazza Navona and the famous Trevi Fountain. Soak up the atmosphere as you pass pretty trattorias, colourful ice cream parlours and strings of buzzing cafes, bars and restaurants.
Nightlife
Piazza Navona's stylish wine bars are the perfect place to enjoy an after-dinner tipple or two, with must-visits including Cul de Sac, Bar del Fico, and Mimì e Coco. Or spend the evening looking out over the Eternal City at one of Rome's rooftop bars such as La Terrasse Cuisine.
Sightseeing at Pantheon
When you visit Rome on holiday you simply cannot miss this city's ancient sights. Situated in the heart of the city, the spellbinding Colosseum (the largest amphitheatre in the world) is a must visit along with the Pantheon, built as a temple to the Roman Gods, the Vatican City and the Trevi Fountain. Visit the Santa Maria in Trastevere church for its picture-perfect mosaics, enjoy traditional cuisine at Da Enzo, or, for panoramic views of the city skyline, climb up the Gianicolo (the eighth hill of Rome) which also has a statue of Garibaldi. Once the sun sets, find the uber popular lounge bar Freni e Frizioni for well-deserved cocktail.
Monti Market
A visit to Monti is a must for those seeking stylish streets, charming houses and picturesque piazzas. Located in the middle of Centro Storico, it's easy to find and is the best place for souvenir shops. The Borghetto Flaminio Market, hosted on Sunday at the Piazza della Marina, is a treasure trove of vintage luxury fashion, and The Ponte Milvio Market, beside the Tiber, is also a great spot to enjoy the sunshine as you shop for antiques! Save time for the Porto Portese Flea Market on a Sunday morning and fill your bags with trinkets, antiques and specialities from the endless rows of stalls.
Shopping in Rome
In the world of fashion, Rome is recognised for its elegance, sophistication and style. The Via Condotti is a swanky street sprinkled with high-end stores and boutiques including Bulgari, Yves. St Laurent, Armani and Gucci. If you want to be a little kinder to your wallet find the best of both worlds at Via Cola di Rienzo where there is a mixture of designer and high street shops. Find your H&M's at Via del Corso, also home to the Galleria Alberto Soldi shopping centre. Via del Boschetto's boutiques house the best handmade items in the neighbourhood, while the Mercato Monti's urban market is a must for vintage fashion and one-off finds.
History & Culture
In the heart of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City stands the Sistine Chapel. This stunning building is one of Rome's most visit sites. Its famous ceiling - a colourful fresco painted by Michelangelo – is the highlight. Take a tour of the Chapel's spectacular portfolio of artwork with an expert guide, before heading into St. Peter's Square, where the masses gather to listen to the Pope.
Pizza & Gelato!
Picking up a slice of pizza and a gelato is pretty much a must when in Rome! Not too far from the Pantheon is Giolitti, the famous gelato store which has been run by the same family since 1990 - become a regular here and you'll get a 'FastPass' allowing you to skip past the queues and head straight for the cones. If you fancy a slice of pizza while you're on the go, Pizza al Taglio (pizza by the slice) is a street-side pizza place that certainly packs in the flavour. Pizzeria Florida, Pizzarium and Forno la Renella are some of the best pizza finds in the city.
