Getting Around

The traffic-free streets of the city are a joy to walk around. However, you could also opt for one of the boats that float on the city’s vast network of canals. Water buses are a cheaper option compared to a water taxi. Gondolas are a more romantic way of travel, but not very practical - or you could use the cheap traghetto gondola ferry. Regular ferries run from the city centre across to the Lido.

Get Around on a Gondola

Get Around on a Gondola

Experience your very own Venetian fairytale and take a romantic gondola ride along the famous Grand Canal. Pass underneath the Rialto Bridge, with a gondolier warbling as he rows, and sail by historical buildings and pretty palaces. There is a tour to suit all, so if you'd prefer a guide that doesn't exercise his vocal chords you can opt for a quieter gondalier. Prices fluctuate so it's always worth trying to strike a deal with the gondaliers.

Stroll through St. Mark’s Square

Stroll through St. Mark’s Square

Considered to be one of the finest square's in the world and the city's prime attraction, the beautiful Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's Square) is best enjoyed early in the morning or at sunset. Lined by pretty public buildings and the enchanting chapel of Basilica di San Marco – a perfect example of Byzantine architecture - it's no wonder visitors flock to spend time in this picturesque square. Find a pretty pavement café to wine and dine in, take photos of the iconic Torre dell'Orologio clock tower and meander around the Museo Correr and Museo del Risorgimento's beautiful 18th century interiors before you leave.
